Match Report
Punjab Kings won their maiden IPL title with a clinical display completing a nail-biting six-run win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Ahmedabad. Prabhsimran Singh top-scored for the side with a 31-ball 61, a knock that included three sixes and seven fours, while Shreyas Iyer scored his second straight fifty to guide the team to 218/5. Virat Kohli’s 74 off 47 balls went in vain as RCB could manage only 212/7 in response as Arshdeep Singh and Yuzvendra Chahal finished with two wickets.
After being put into bat, PBKS started in similar fashion as they have done throughout the season with Prabhsimran and Priyansh Arya powering the side to 68 in the powerplay. Though Arya departed after an 11-ball 24, captain Shreyas Iyer, who walked in ahead of Josh Inglis, ensured that PBKS continued the momentum in the middle overs as he handled spin with ease. With Prabhsimran departing after making a fifty, it was left to Shreyas to anchor the innings into the death overs. He managed to do that scoring three sixes and four boundaries in his 36-ball 53. After his departure, Josh Inglis, Nehal Wadhera and Marcus Stoinis all played entertaining cameos to see the side go past the 200-run mark setting a daunting target of 219 for RCB. Pacer Josh Hazlewood took 2/30 in four overs while Romario Shepherd and Krunal Pandya picked up one wicket apiece.
RCB’s hopes once again rested heavily on the opening pair of Virat Kohli and Phil Salt who started off in an aggressive fashion to keep the side in the chase. With Salt walking back for a 17-ball 28, captain Rajat Patidar joined Kohli to keep the scoreboard ticking as RCB went past the 100-run mark in the 11th over. Kohli completed his ninth fifty in IPL 2025 before losing his wicket trying to up the scoring rate. His 47-ball 74 included six fours and two sixes but RCB still had a job on hand. However, Kohli’s dismissal triggered a collapse with leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissing Patidar and Tim David in the same over as RCB slowly lost its way. With 13 runs to get off the last over, death-over specialist Arshdeep Singh was up for the job again as he conceded just six runs to end Punjab Kings’ trophy drought in the IPL. The left-arm pacer picked up 2/38 in four overs while Chahal had figures of 2/37 as the RCB innings ended at 212/7 with captain Patidar (31 off 19 balls) being the next best scorer after Kohli.
Player of the Match
PBKS’ Prabhsimran Singh won the Player of the Match award for his 31-ball 61 which gave his side an excellent start in the final.
